The King by Daniel - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with an historical figure, I would have dinner with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. If I could have dinner with the King, I would ask him what he thinks of where things are today.
I would ask him how to continue the work he devoted his life to, the work he left unfinished. I would ask him how we can finish it. I would ask him what we can do about war, about race, about the environment, about our place in the universe, and about poverty. I would ask him about equality. How far have we come? How far do we have to go? I would ask him if we are any closer to that dream, or any farther down the road to ruin. I would ask him what he thinks about Black Lives Matter, Barack Obama, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Hamilton and Blackish. I would ask him who the writers are that inspired him. Who are the prophets whose visions can still guide us? I would ask him who he thinks should be elected president. I would ask him if there is still something worth saving in this complicated system.
But most importantly, I would listen.
