Night by Daniel - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
The best book I’ve ever read for school was during high school. I was in English class and my teacher assigned a reading called Night by Elie Wiesel. At first I thought this book was going to be boring and just about “educational” things. I couldn’t be more wrong. This book has really taught me about what the holocaust is. I never knew anything about it until I read this book. The book went in so much detail about the concentration camps, all the way to all the Jews that were getting killed just for being a Jew. What really shocked me was that a lot of the soldiers threw up babies in the air and shot them, it just made me wonder how people can be so cruel to one another. Another shocking thing I read also was how the soldiers told the Jews that they were going to take a nice hot shower, and when they got in there the soldiers locked the doors and poisoned everyone in there. Reading this book has really opened my eyes to the world around me and makes me want to help other people in need because I don’t ever want something like this to happen again in our time. The survivors of the holocaust such as Elie Wiesel are a huge inspiration to me because they experienced all of this first hand and lived to tell the tale. In my eyes, Elie Wiesel is a hero and I’m very glad he was able to tell us his experience of the whole thing. I’m very happy that my teacher assigned this reading for class because I think every student should know about what happened during the holocaust.
