The Bowl of Pebbles by Daniel - July 2018 Scholarship Essay

Imagine you are holding a bowl filled with pebbles. They are all different are they not. Some are larger than others, they have different colors, and possibly even a different texture. Each pebble has been different places, has been through its own journey. Well if you look around you we are all like those pebbles in the bowl you hold in your hands. We are all different, there is differences even within those that have a similar appearance. Our skin color is different, our culture, our stories are different. However we are all human, the pebbles in the bowl are all pebbles regardless of how different they can be.
The institution we now form a part of, Sewanee, was once dominated by racism told by its ties to slavery, was one a place where our differences were too large to accept and embrace each other. But we have come a long way. Classrooms are and are still becoming more diverse. We are learning to embrace each other’s cultural differences through organizations such as, Hispanic Organization of Latino Awareness, and the fraternity Gamma Sigma Phi, whose purpose is to serve as a cultural bridge on campus. Yes, we have more work to do, but there is progress.
As your class president I will ensure that the progress towards a more welcoming environment continues. An environment where it is okay to be black, green, yellow, or any color you want to be or are. An environment where it is okay to believe in God, Gods, trees, or whatever you would like to believe in. I will ensure that we continue to progress towards a diverse welcoming environment by hosting more cultural events where we learn about each other’s culture, by supporting organizations who aim to serve as cultural bridges, and by scolding harshly those who oppose diversity and change. Vote for me and never fear to be different ever again.
