Desire by Daniel - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

The ability to provide for a family and to keep my loved ones safe. The opportunity to change the world with the ability to lobby a bill in Congress. Standing above Capitol Hill as I take the oath to become the President of the United States. These are just a few of the reasons I desire to go to college. I desire to be successful and to be remembered as someone that made a difference in the world that we live in. Without college, I know that my desires will only be a dream. But by attending a secondary school, I will be able to make my dreams a reality. Studying and lectures are boring to some, but for me, I desire to have to opportunity to think critically and further my knowledge.
I am only afraid of one thing in life; the fear of being ordinary. I fear that one day, my life will be considered average. My potential is not average, nor are my dreams. But with the absence of a college degree, the doors of opportunities begin to close. The fear of being ordinary is why I desire to go to college. I desire to be someone that's life is discussed centuries after their death. I want my grandchildren to learn about my life in their History classes. I desire to be someone different, someone, that is remembered for eternity.
Deciding a word on why I wish to attend college was not difficult. Instantly, the word desire came to mind. This simple six letter word has inspired me to be who the person I am today. Growing up in a mentally and verbally abusive home, I desired to have a happy family when I grew older. That desire gave me the courage and strength to continue throughout my days. I knew that if the desire for a happier home ended, then there would never be a light at the end of the torture my mother and I was facing. I would have given up if it was not for desire. Desire got me through tough times when deciding on whether I wanted to be a face in the crowd or if I wanted to be someone extraordinary in high school. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, I ran for offices in organizations that would better my leadership skills. Today, I am the president of the largest FFA in our section. I desired to change others lives by organizing events that would help make a difference. The word desire is special to me. For many people, desire is just another word; but for me, desire is what keeps me going throughout life.
