The Greatest Experiences Come From Giving by Dana - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

For the past few years I have volunteered at a homeless shelter to prepare and serve food to those at the shelter. While this seems like something so simple, it was quite an eye-opening experience for me. I was there willingly giving my time, while these people were here depending on this place to provide hot meals and a place to sleep at night. While serving the food, I got to briefly talk to the guests at the shelter. Each of them were humble, thankful, and happy to see us. They always said please and thank you and gave lots of smiles. After serving for a bit, I decided to make a tray of food and sit in the dining area with some of the people in need. I talked to a joyful woman and we conversed about cooking for quite a bit. Another man at the table was shyer, but eventually held conversations with me and offered to help me get the last bit of lemonade, even though he wanted some himself. I've never met such warm-hearted and giving people than those at this homeless shelter.

I could genuinely say that serving these people was an experience that changed my life. It taught me that each moment of life is precious and to be extremely grateful for every small thing I have. Also, it showed me how kindness can come from anyone, no matter what is going on in their lives. Many people use excuses to be unkind or to not get things done. These people I met have actual reasons to be unhappy with life, yet they are so willing to give up things they don't even have. This experience has made me look at life different, as well as how others are treating other people. I am so grateful for life, but especially for getting to meet these wonderful people.
