One Word; Five Letters by Dana - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Death. It could happen to any person at any moment, and yet, we are all still trying to live our lives as best we can. No matter how many punches life throws at us, we, as humans, continue to push forward. We continue to innovate; we continue to fight against death. Our own food options, our own living conditions, and our own medicines give us the power to live longer. These things help us prevent death far better than ever in the past, but there is still room for improvement.
Death is not pleasant to withstand as a loved one. Believe me; I know. Recently, I lost a niece due to a heart condition and several other family members due to cancer. These losses make me want to pursue a career in genetics so that I can help those affected by similar conditions and find solutions to prevent and cure diseases that hurt so many people. I would also like to see how diseases and losses affect the brain and focus on solutions to help people. I want to help people lead healthy, good lives without worrying about genetic disease or cancer. Death is inevitable, but I want to go to college to further my education because I want to postpone as much death as possible. If a problem is a person’s inspiration, then I would think of death as my ultimate inspiration and motivation to learn, grow, and develop into a person who can help others through my college education.
