Studying Abroad: Shouldn't it be a Privilage? by Dana - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Have you ever been forced to do something at school or at a job and have been extremely unhappy while doing so? I can see that happening for some students if studying abroad was a requirement. Although there are many opportunities and sites to see while studying abroad, I do not believe it should be required by colleges and universities.
I have had many friends that studied abroad while in college and said it was an experience like no other and that there is no experience like it. However some individuals may not feel the same. Some people are home bodies and like the familiar. I happen to be one of those people. The pictures, testimonials of students and classes all are appealing when hearing about studying abroad in different places; however nothing compares to my room, my family and my friends being in the same states as where I reside. Some students may feel the same. The comfort of being close to home and around what you know is what may drive some individuals. Forcing someone to travel to another country may affect their lives drastically. There are some students that would love it when they arrived, but one must not forget some of those that will not be able to enjoy what is around them due to missing their family, friends and the familiar. It is also important to note that studying abroad may not be available to some students due to financial reasons. Although many people say it is priceless to study abroad there are many students that would not be able to afford the many expenses that come along with it. I would have to ask if it was required would loans and financial aid be accepted towards the cost? This would be a huge concern for much of the college population.
Another huge concern would be those students who are on academic probation. Would they be required even if they may be in danger of failing? Studying abroad should be a privilege, not a requirement.
Whether it is due to personal concerns or practical concerns (such as money) there are many reasons as to why having studying abroad a requirement can be seen as a negative. Although it is a great idea for students to have the experience the student population who are home bodies cannot be overlooked.
