The Class that Achieves Student's Expectations by Damien - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Becoming a college professor has always been an interest of mine, the fact that you get to teach a subject you mastered, do independent research, and receive a high-paying salary, is fascinating to me. Even though it is not my number one choice for a future career, I would enjoy becoming one. There are times that I’ve wanted to be a high-school, but now that I’m in my senior year, I learned that being a professor is a lot more rewarding than teaching at a high school.

If I were a college professor, I would most likely want to teach Psychology. I took an intro to psychology course in my junior year of high school, and while it was difficult at times, I can say that without a doubt, it was my favorite college class I took that year. My favorite chapter would have to be the memory, with some of the interesting terms like serial position effect, semantic encoding, and mnemonics. Psychology is also extremely useful in the real world, with its research helping millions of people who have mental disorders and desperately need a therapist or psychologist.

Of course, Psychology professors also do independent research, and my research would be focused on evolutionary psychology, which is the science that tries to explain, through universal mechanisms of behavior, why humans act the way that they do. It is basically a theoretical approach to psychology, and being able to discover things that have not been thought of before is exciting.

Overall, I would want to teach psychology if I were a professor, and I would, without a doubt, enjoy every minute of it.
