My Community Service by Dalton - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

Community service is an important part of my life. I like being a part of the community and finding organizations where I can help others. In high school I was part of a group that visited elementary schools to help the homeless or poverty children. It was like being a big brother to an elementary school kid. I brought my little brother snacks, toys and played games. For Christmas I gave him a gift, a stuffed animal. I am in band and in marching band. I was able to share my experiences of middle school and high school band. He liked my stories of how much fun the band was and told me he wanted to be in the band in middle school. Mostly we played a lot of games and I helped him with subjects he was struggling in like reading and math. Helping my little brother at the elementary school was the inspiration for me pursuing a bachelor's degree in Music Education. I discovered I have a passion for teaching kids and seeing the excitement in their faces when they learn something new. This was very rewarding knowing I made a difference in my little brother’s life.

In college I was fortunate in my English class to participate in Books for Africa. This community service involved meeting at an African book store and boxing educational books such as writing, reading and arithmetic to send to children in Africa. It was very rewarding to volunteer at this organization since I am pursuing teaching and knowing that these books will be in the hands of children that will be learning arithmetic, writing and reading.

Me being involved with the community and the school keeps me active and puts me in a position to understand and know what to do when I am overwhelmed with a lot of things. It also made me happy just to help others. Like me, other people also struggle too so why not find a way to find peace in difficult situations. Imagine how much better societies would be if every person in the world would help just one person each day.
