My passion for my major by Dallas - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

When I get to college, I plan to major in political science on the pre-law track. My decision is rooted in a deep desire to pursue justice, create change, and amplify the voices of those who are often unheard. Political science is more than just the study of government—it's about understanding how power is structured, how laws are made, and how those systems affect real people. It’s about learning the mechanisms behind policy decisions and using that knowledge to advocate for fairness, equality, and opportunity. That’s the kind of work I want to dedicate my life to.

Growing up, I was always curious about how the world works and why certain groups of people seem to have more opportunities or rights than others. As I got older, I realized that many of these inequalities are not accidental—they are built into the systems that govern us. Political science gives me the chance to understand these systems in depth. It allows me to explore the historical, legal, and social foundations of policy while critically thinking about how they can be reformed or improved.

Being on the pre-law track is a natural step for me because I see the law as a powerful tool for change. My goal is to become an international lawyer, someone who can work across borders to protect human rights, represent marginalized groups, and promote global justice. The legal field demands strong reasoning, communication, and analytical skills, all of which political science will help me develop. I’m especially interested in international relations, constitutional law, and civil rights—areas where law and policy come together to shape the lives of millions.

This major also aligns with my experiences and leadership roles throughout high school. As someone who has been involved in student government, political science clubs, and community outreach, I’ve seen firsthand how policy decisions impact schools, families, and local communities. I’ve also spoken up about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in environments where those conversations are often uncomfortable. These moments have shown me that change starts with awareness, but it doesn’t end there. Real change comes when people are educated, organized, and willing to challenge systems—and that’s exactly what political science teaches.

Another reason I chose this path is because I want to represent people who look like me—Black women from the South—on national and international stages. There are not nearly enough of us in the legal or political world, and that underrepresentation matters. It means decisions are being made without our perspective, and that needs to change. I want to be someone who can sit at those tables and speak not just for myself, but for the communities and cultures that shaped me.

Ultimately, political science is the right major for me because it reflects both my passion and my purpose. It will prepare me for law school and give me the tools I need to become the kind of lawyer who doesn’t just win cases, but changes lives. I’m excited to learn, grow, and challenge myself academically, but I’m even more excited to use what I learn to make a difference in the world. That’s what motivates me every day, and that’s why I chose this major.
