Organization and Motivation by Dakota - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Organization and Motivation are the keys to success. A New Year’s Resolution that will help me become a better student in 2016 is to use these keys to unlock the thick metal door in between success and myself. In my younger years, I lost all sense of organization and motivation. “I’ll do it later”, and “I’ll put this where it goes later”, were common catch phrases for the person I was becoming. Lacking organization and the motivation to get things done was causing my grades to drop, my test grades to drop, and even my GPA. These keys are things that I need to gain back in my life.
Without organization, how would one find any of his or her notes, assignments, or even a pencil? Being unprepared for class and homework can cause one’s grades to go into a spiral that only goes down. Although my grades and GPA only dropped slightly, I realize the way I have been going is not good enough to meet my own expectations. Barely slipping by is in the past for me. Instead of digging my work out of my backpack at the last minute, I now have a notebook that holds every homework assignment. Everything is color coated, and my notes are in order by date. I no longer waste time scrambling around to get things done because I keep every assignment written down, so I know what I need to accomplish. In this New Year, I have vowed to keep my organization up to par.
There is definitely an “I” in motivation. Before, I must have spelled it motvaton, but I will not anymore. Constantly, I would say, “I’ll just do it later.” I would put off essays until the last night. I did not study for tests until the day of. I was wasting time and making mediocre grades; I was lazy. Now I will keep up. Along with organization, I have vowed constant motivation. I now keep in contact with UCA to keep me motivated to be the best that I can be. I keep events and deadlines posted around my room; they are constant reminders that college is not that far off, and I need to step up my game if I want to get in. Og Mandino once said, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” Mandino’s quote is now my motto. I will not fail; I will succeed.
In this New Year, I pledge to be as successful as I am capable of. I will stay organized. I will not slack. “I’ll do it later”, and wasting time are for the past. I will keep up with my goals, and I will achieve through organization and motivation. 2016 is a new year; therefore, I am a new me.
