College needs Rubber Bands by Daisy - September 2014 Scholarship Essay
Being that college is the first time a young adult is truly on their own, I feel that resilience is a skill that everyone needs. Resilience is the capacity to recover from difficulties. Resilience is a skill because it is something you are not born with, and learn over time. It is the way a person would react to a tough situation, involving their behaviors, actions, and thoughts. Other skills that come with being resilient are managing impulses, making plans and following through with them, then also having a positive outlook on life.
When picking out a rubber band, would you pick out a thin one that is tight and overstretched? Or a rubber band that can stretch and hold anything you need, then bounce back for the next thing you need it for? I feel that people should be as simple as rubber bands. When life needs you, you have to be ready and willing, like a good rubber band. Even in those tough times in life when you struggle to keep going, you have to recover quickly, because life will never slow down for you.
I believe that a college student should be resilient in order to be away from their families, stay focused in school-at the most stressful times, to be better at time management, and to stay positive and succeed. Children, teenagers, and young adults all become more resilient as they grow older if they choose to be so. Being resilient is a decision you make every time you come across a difficult situation. The way you handle that situation defines you. College, being a place where you’re on your own; you don’t have anyone to fall back on for assistance and guidance to pick you back up when you fall down, you have to rely on your own personal strength to bounce back up.
