Another Dystopia by Daisha - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
"And what would they be scared of? There's nothing to fear in a perfect world is there?" Though dystopian societies intentions may be to create a 'perfect' world, all evolve into places in which everything is unpleasant and filled with human misery. Dystopian novels show us that there is no such thing as a perfect world and attempting to forcibly create one only ends in misery. They teach us that society can't grow or change unless action is taking and that your average Joe or Jane can make a difference. 1984, The Giver, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and many more have left their mark and message to all generations and will undoubtedly continue to resonate with future generations. So if I were to write a book it would be dystopian centered around the criticisms of my generation, Generation Y.
My generation is criticized for being narcissistic, entitled, and lacking empathy. My book would play on these criticism and create a world where everyone is forced not to care about others and only think of themselves. Maybe there will be something that genetically alters a person at birth not to care, or something else that compels everyone in society to be narcissist. Regardless of how a world like this is created, it would obviously be complete chaos, chaos that many will notice and few brave individuals will try to change.
I would write a book like this ,because It is a book I would never forget; it would compel readers to think of how the world is and encourage people that they can make a difference. Dystopian novels entertain, enlighten, and encourage change ,and I would want to do the same things if I were to write a book.
