Putting the "I" into Education by Dahlia - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
My mother has always said, “Education is the most powerful weapon in your life.” Day after day, I always live by that motto. It’s what keeps me motivated to never give up in school, nor to disappoint her either. She didn’t have the chance to go to college, so to me personally, it’s a requirement in life. That degree is more than just a piece of paper. It’s my future. There may be several highly successful people who dropped out of school, but I see that as a huge risk. This is because most people out there are struggling with a minimum wage job. They’re existing more than living.
Students always get asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And honestly, I get shocked to hear the answer from peers saying, “I don’t know.” I wonder what keeps them moving forward in school when I look at them as they turn their away from their own response. It makes it seem like they are ashamed of themselves for not knowing what kind of world is out there. I personally want to become a professor at a university when I grow older; particularly in a field of science, because I’ve always wanted to follow my father’s footsteps ever since I was in the 7th grade. I’ve always stuck up to it and envisioned being one; I want to make sure that my students would want to have their own desire of willingness to continue on. Teachers make the impression of what school really is on the students, and I promise that I will make an unforgettable one. You have to consider the other people in your life, but we shouldn't depend on them so much. Those who wander off around school need to realize that they won’t have the people who take care of them much longer. I always keep track on my 4 year high school plan. I know what classes I would be taking as a senior even though I am a soon-to-be junior.
I wish others would consider their long-term goals more. It makes me feel committed to what I stand for when you think on the early stage for the later ones. People have been trying to make education free or at least on low-cost levels for a reason: to encourage others to pursue their dreams. Nothing else seems like it is going to stop you now. So to all the students out there, yes it is worth it for working on those mind-boggling assignments, applying for those scholarships, raising your hand even if you feel shy for asking questions, or even at least showing up to your classes. All I’m asking for mankind is to please put your dedication into education for a reputation.
