The academic subject I would teach by Dacy - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Never have I aspired to become a teacher, but if the tables were turned and I was granted the chance to be a teacher the academic subject I would choose to teach would be science. My love for science generates from loving the outdoors and all it inhabits. Most southern women love the outside, but my love extends beyond that of a typical southern woman. I not only love the earthworms, the water, and the trees, but comprehending the vast compounds of which they are composed makes me feel complete; this type of science is better known as biology, and it is my favorite branch of science.
Waking up at 5:00 a.m., five days a week, nine months out of the year and driving to school would not be bad if I got to be in control of my own classroom. However, it would be horrific if I had to teach a subject I do not find interest in such as math. If I had to teach math, I would not keep a smiling face throughout the day, nor would I put my heart into transferring my knowledge into the minds of unlearned children. If I did not accomplish either of these then would I really be a teacher? No. Teachers are held to a higher level; they should always seem happy to be at work and be willing to teach. If given a chance to teach science, I would perform both of these tasks. Science makes me happy, and it is easy for me to learn. Becoming a science teacher would allow me the chance to show kids just how easy and exciting science really is. If I could make just one kid fall in love with science, waking up at 5 a.m. five days a week would be totally rewarding; it would make me feel like I accomplished something by being a teacher.
Not only would I enjoy being a teacher because I would get the chance to show someone how easy it is to fall in love with science, but I would also get the chance to sponsor a club or extracurricular activity. Throughout high school, I have been involved in many clubs and sports including beta club, Spanish club, NSHSS, yearbook, softball, volleyball, and dance. How awesome would it be to be the sponsor/coach of such activities? Being a teammate or participant is different from being in control of what takes place within the group. Being granted the chance for tables to turn would allow me to understand how much hard work it takes to put on an event. After realizing how hard it is, I would gain an even greater amount of respect for sponsors/coaches.
Teachers invest so much of their time into students. As a student, it is easy to say “teachers are here only to bore us and make us do unnecessary work.” Such statement is not true; teachers make their week revolve around the students they interact with throughout the day. From the time they arrive until the time they leave their focus is on the betterment of students, they only want to see you succeed. Being a teacher for a day would allow me to show someone science is exciting and easy to fall in love with and it would allow me to sponsor/coach an activity near to my heart; both are truly rewarding.
