High School's What You Make It: Enjoy by Cymone - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
As a freshman entering high school, you will undoubtedly receive a plethora of knowledge and wisdom from your 'elders' (seniors). Some of it is extremely wise, and some, not so much. To keep it simple, follow this one rule: look for yourself and pursue what YOU want. Although television sitcoms and cliché books about our great teenage angst do a great job of portraying this, high school does NOT have to be a horrible experience! It does not have to be about fitting in, or being popular, or winning homecoming queen or king. As the saying goes, "life is what you make it", and the same rule applies for high school. You can make it all fun, all work, or all laziness, or a combination of whichever you so please. The choice is up to you.
Few people know who they are and what they want to do when they grow up at this age. This is the time to start discovering what that is. Find yourself in clubs, sports, teams, and organizations. If you love to read, join a book club! Enjoyed playing rec soccer? Try out for the high school team. Always had fun arguing with you parents? Join the debate team! The world, or in this case, your high school, is your oyster. Take full of advantage of what your school has to offer and make the best of it.
Most importantly, however, when considering this take into account that not a single one of your decisions should be based upon what others expect of you or want you to do. Set standards and goals for yourself and achieve them. Expect highly of yourself and live up to that expectation. High school can be a very nasty place, and the same can be said about the real world. However, if you keep your head high and keep pushing forward, very little can bring you down. Keep your eye on the prize and keep pursuing what you want.
High school is a time for meeting new people, having fun, working hard, but above all, discovering new things about yourself. Always keep that in mind.
