Destiny by Crysten - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
What is destiny?
I am deeply intrigued by destiny—what is yours or mine, what of it, and what does everyone think about it? Is destiny a straight line? Or is it a series of preordained events, and we are left to fill in the gaps? Do we want to know? No.
We are satisfied with “knowing” we can’t do something, or have something, or be something. We are scared to create change, and essentially starting something new. We are complacent. It's easier to admit defeat and accept that fact that some things just aren't meant to be. But we are not beings chained to fate. The line is not straight and the gaps aren't filled. Whether you want to try out for a varsity team or run for Student Council President, the opportunity is there. We're people--we hurt, we envy, and we lust. There will be people who want the same thing that you do, and yes, they will cut you down. They will say you aren't pretty enough, or too short, or too fat, or simply just not enough.
High school is an opportunity for discovery, and ultimately change. It doesn't matter who your parents are, or what your GPA is, or what kinds of clothes you wear. You're the future. You have ideas, thoughts, and words that will someday change the world; you are precious and you are wanted. Don't follow a path paved by those no greater or lesser than you. There's something out there greater and better than you could ever imagine, and the person to pursue that is you.
