From Fiction To a Reality by Cristian - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Choosing a major usually begins from the link between past experiences, personal interests, and aspirations for a future career. For me, the path to selecting Computer Science as my field of study was significantly influenced by an unconventional source: namely, the television show "Mr. Robot." As strange as it may sound for a series to dictate one’s future both academically and professionally, "Mr. Robot" did more than just entertain. Through this fictional representation of reality, I learned about the significant implications that cybersecurity has in our modern society today.

"Mr. Robot" has an exciting plot around Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer by day and a hacker by night. His double life and his desire to change the world with his hacking skills spoke deeply to me as well. Themed around digital privacy, ethical hacking, and the social ramifications of technology, this show lays out a world where information equals power, which can be used for good or bad. Witnessing Elliot's journey, his struggles, and his ambitions to make a meaningful difference sparked a realization within me: I dreamt of joining the tip of the spear that secures digital boundaries.

This started my journey into the world of Computer Science, with a sharp interest in cybersecurity. The deeper I delved into this field, the more attracted I became to the intricacy of digital systems and the incessant ‘cat and mouse’ chase between cybersecurity professionals and criminal hackers. The constant dynamic of technology, forever innovating, and the never-ending learning period excited me. It simply became obvious that pursuing a Computer Science degree would not only satisfy my innate curiosity but also provide me with the skills needed to contribute positively in whatever way, as did Mr. Robot’s character.

I desire to work with such honorary agencies as the FBI and CIA so that my knowledge can be translated into action for succeeding in bigger goals. To be at the forefront of national security and fighting cyber threats is both relatively fun and dignified. It is a vocation rich in self-realization but also enriched with the possibility to leave an actual mark upon society’s security and welfare.

In closing, although my predilection towards Computer Science as a major was initiated by a television series, it is built on the ground with knowledge of the importance that field has for me and how I want to contribute to a safer digital world. "Mr. Robot" was the shock that resulted in an active interest in technology, leading me to start actively thinking about a career in cybersecurity matters, to be exact. As I write each line of code and as my attempts to secure systems succeed, we get closer to achieving our goal changing the world for the better.
