Pay It Forward by Cristian - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

After years of closely working with a physical therapist, I was inspired by their tremendous ability to help me in my healing journey. I worked harder than ever before and learned how vital rehabilitation is. Sadly, I was unable to participate in any sports for over a year due to my back injury. However, these unique challenges helped me in so many ways. It taught me dedication, discipline, responsibility, and teamwork. My injury fueled me to work harder than I had ever before. I found an inner strength and confidence that I never knew I had. I worked my way to the healthiest and strongest I could be. Through this journey, I saw the value of hard work and determination, the importance of physical and mental health, and how to overcome adversity. I learned numerous lessons that shaped me into the person I am today. I realized that in sports, as in life, we win and lose; we get discouraged but must get up and never give up.

I found a new appreciation for healthcare workers that gave me hope. With the help of my physical therapist, I became stronger and healthier. I discovered that one day, I want to make the same impact on others. Physical therapists have one of the most essential responsibilities in the healthcare industry. Although this work can be challenging on many levels, I am determined to work with patients and be instrumental in helping improve their lives.

Through my journey, I have learned that anything is possible. I will reach my goals by earning my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology to effectively study the human body and understand how our bodies move and function. I am passionate about improving our ability to perform and will aim to help others work towards rehabilitation. After studying the mechanics of human movement and how it affects our overall health and well-being, I can pursue an advanced degree in Physical therapy.

I will continue to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, work with athletes who have encountered injuries like myself, and work towards reducing the risk of injuries. As a Sports Physical Therapist, I will be privileged to work with athletes by creating a tailored treatment plan to help them overcome injuries, regain strength, and achieve optimal performance goals. My challenges have motivated me to stay 100% committed and focused on reaching my goals. I once had a physical therapist champion for me. I promised myself I would one day help athletes rehabilitate and Champion them. Because of my therapist, I am motivated to pay it forward and work hard to fulfill my dreams.
