Avoiding the Problem or Problem-Solving? by Cristal - February 2023 Scholarship Essay

When entering the classroom there may be multiple things on the student's mind. “What will I be doing in class today? Will I have to take a lot of notes like last time or is there a discussion? I'm still really confused about the last discussion that we had last class.” These questions quickly fill the student's minds and they dwell on them till their teacher explains. Or at least that's how I have felt at times at the beginning of some of my classes. This feeling of worry and overthinking may lead multiple students to develop discomfort with not knowing the plan or feel overwhelmed by how quickly the subjects are changing. While this overthinking process can influence students to avoid indulging themselves in lectures, and not being as interactive with the lesson as their peers who are benefiting from it. Instead of problem-solving when caught in a stressful situation, a student only holds themselves back from their full potential of being successful student. The key to success is having the ability to respond to a difficult situation with a positive attitude and the right actions. The most beneficial soft skill a student should have is problem-solving skills to benefit them on their path to being a successful student.
There are many challenges that a student may face in their time inside the classroom. Obstacles faced in the classroom might discourage the student to interact in the classroom. It is important for the student to learn how to take advantage of the situation at hand no matter how difficult it may seem. A productive student will find alternatives besides attending their class lectures passively. Some students may also reach a point where they avoid classes or school altogether. The student can learn how to ask for help from their teacher and their peers. By forming an academic and professional relationship, the student will feel more comfortable reaching out and more likely to succeed because they have support.
Having the soft skill of taking action into your own hands and finding alternatives is a necessary skill to be a successful student and overall create a positive habit for a person overall. Developing this skill will be a positive impact on the person inside and outside the classroom, someone who will persevere through hardships and accomplish their goals.
