Confidence Thrice Over by Courtney - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

I do not think that leadership skills are necessary for college success. I think that confidence and interpersonal skills are what lead to success for college students. Each of these skills are a part of leadership skills but are not all the skills involved. Confidence is needed in social, emotional, and academic areas. Interpersonal skills are needed in the same areas to further students success. While students can succeed without being leaders, they do need confidence and interpersonal skills to be successful.

Emotional confidence is the key for success in college because it bleeds into every other area of life. From personal experience, I know that emotional confidence can help students feel confidence in their academics and their social lives. When a student doesn’t feel that they are full of worth, college success can falter. Feeling confident in their own emotional stability helps students have confidence in their academic work because happiness is tied to success.

Confidence in the academic area of is critical because as much as students are pressured to join clubs and societies, academics lead the way for students. Confidence in academics stems from a student being able to see the quality of their work. Having confidence in academic work leads to success because it helps students see that they are able to keep up with college level work.

Social confidence ties both academic and emotional confidence together. Social confidence is needed for college success because it shows that students are comfortable with themselves enough to interact with other students, professors, staff, and future employers. This is also a part of interpersonal skills because having the ability to successfully communicate with others and in a way that shows the students cares about what others say.

Overall, I think that confidence in social, emotional, and academic realms help lead to students’ success more than leadership skills. While confidence and interpersonal skills are by definition a part of leadership, I think that being a leader doesn’t lead to success in college.
