Why the Goals We Set Matter by Corley - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Educationally, goals are laid out for students up until high school graduation, they do not have to think about what the goal is or how to get there, they have someone holding their hand. But after that, the road branches off with endless paths that can be pursued. I have chosen the path to college straight out of high school. As a student who Dual Enrolled for Junior and Senior years of high school, I had always assumed college was the only choice, because it was the next logical step, and both of my parents did it so that must be the right thing, right? While that is not true for everyone, it is the best choice for me; not because it is my only option, but because I have decided I have big educational goals, that I know I am capable of reaching. By age twenty-five, I hope to be a counselor to young teens and their families. To do that I will need to obtain a master's degree at a minimum, however ideally I will have graduated with my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
While the goals I have are logical, by no means do I think they will be easy to achieve. I am not a person who does things halfway, I give full effort to everything in my life. These goals of mine are achievable, but more importantly, reaching them means I can help others. Every goal should push you to be greater, both in the process and the outcome. I know that on the way to reaching my goal of a Doctorate, I will be tried, tired, and refined. It is my ultimate goal educationally to obtain my doctorate. But personally, my ultimate goal is to encourage those I counsel to believe they can achieve any educational goal they set for themselves.
