The Importance of Managing Time by Corinne - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
Countless people struggle with time management. Exclamations of, “I’m busy!” or “I have too much to do!” are adamant proof of this. Those in need of improving their time management often joke about procrastination, late assignments, and long nights. At Itineris, learning time management is especially important. As this school offers concurrent enrollment classes for a main elective, attending college during high school is almost a given. Due to the nature of college classes, it is vital for students to balance their studies with homework and life in general.
The first item on the list of to-dos for many students is homework. In high school, homework makes up a good portion of your grade, and every assignment has the potential to boost or drop your grade. In college, homework helps you to understand the material you study and contributes to your overall grade. In either case, students must make time for it. This can be accomplished in several ways. One way would be to set aside a specific time just for homework. This can be at any time of the day, but is generally better placed early on. When this time for homework is earlier in the day, there is less chance of homework leading to a late night and depriving the student of sleep. As this directly affects one’s grades, this item is best placed at the top of the to-do list.
A second item that students must attend to is study. Although study doesn’t directly affect the grade, it improves understand of the topic studied, which can help the student with their homework as well as the test. Without study, a student might find themself struggling to retain information vital to their grades, leading to bad test scores. Studying improves school performance and is vital to make time for. One trick with studying is to study for small increments of time, reviewing daily so as to remember the information. All in all, the importance of studying cannot be stressed enough.
One last item students need to care for is their home life. This includes social activities. With long hours in school and preparing for success, students generally find themselves stressed, and have a hard time focusing on much of anything. This can be alleviated by taking a break to spend time with family, attend a social gathering, or simply hang with friends. These activities are vital to a student’s life, and vital to their future. Without them, a person has trouble functioning in the real world, and at work. Further activities of importance include time spent alone, as too much company can make anyone feel overwhelmed. Simply put, home life is just as vital to success as homework and studying.
Ultimately, time management is essential to schooling, whether it be high school or college. Without time management, either schoolwork or home life is bound to fall behind. If schoolwork is the one to fall, grades will drop the students will likely have a hard time achieving their dreams and building their future. If home life is the one to fall, on the other hand, the student may well go mad, finding themself overwhelmed with stress. If there’s one thing I would advise new students to develop, it would be time management.
