The Tight Rope by Connor - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
My father had told me something when I was at a much younger age, and it has stuck with me ever since. This was the quote I used at his funeral, and that I wanted to put on his grave. We ended up cremating him but something stuck with me through all this time: “You hold onto the tight rope a whole lot tighter when there is no net under it.” Absolute focus on a singular goal can help you achieve a much larger goal with more ease, if one has a backup plan, that person is doing nothing but counting on failure.
What this means that for the things I care about, I am willing to risk it all for the ultimate outcome of glory and happiness for all who surround me. I am hardworking and put in all the work needed to be successful everyday with reaching for my goals in mind throughout the day.
I only needed to apply to a single college, I did not have any need or want for another, I had no back up, the net was dropped. I am going to attend this college and study a field that may not benefit me fiscally, this risky major: music, and I have no back up. These means I must be the hardest working, most determined and best at what I do, because if I am not doing what I have sought to do, I am not being myself. A person filled with purpose is what I aim to be, and college will be a focusing lens, to assist me in my endeavors. I find that leaving no other choice forces me into reaching new heights, that is something my father had always wanted of me, to be the best version of myself I could be. “You hold onto the tight rope a whole lot tighter when there is no net under it.” This is what inspired me to be who I am, no second thoughts and when I had decided, inspired by my father and teachers, I seemed to have seen what felt like what no other individual had seen, passion, desire, and drive.
