Education today by Collin - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

What does education mean to me? To me, education is a daily necessity just like eating and drinking. To be able to learn and expand your mind everyday is something that far too often gets looked past. Students today don't realize how blessed they are to be able to come learn everyday. Education is one of the most important factors of life today as it prepares students for the future and gives them a better chance of success.

Though I think education is important, I believe that there could be a few changes to what we learn and what topics we prioritize. In today's day and age, we teach students how to be workers. Instead, we should teach them to be do-ers! We should put more focus on getting students to really think and dive into their creative minds. I believe that this would drastically change the narrative of education. Many students now view school and education as a waste of time because the material they are learning does not pertain to their interests and desires. If we change the focus of school to fit the needs and interests of students, there would be a huge rise in attendance, and student success.

So what is a solution to the problem of students not valuing education? To me, I think we should implement a wider variety of classes for these students to take. Right now we have mandatory classes such as math, English, history, and science. And as those subjects are important, they don't always fit the interests of students. I believe that an entrepreneur class should be in every school, even if it isn't a required class, having it as an elective would have many benefits. This would allow students to express themselves and possibly create a world changing invention or company. Though it's not easy for every school to open up a new class because of financial issues, I think this could really change the outlook on education forever.
