Mr. Yorke by Collin - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
The teacher that has most positively affected me would have to be Mr. Yorke. John Yorke was my tenth grade history teacher, as well as my soccer coach in high school for four years. Although he was a fantastic teacher, he seemed to inspire me most outside of school, and really pushed me in my learnings.
During my Freshman year of high school, I was really struggling with my classes. However, I was not struggling on the soccer field. I made Varsity right away and earned a starting position. Then, three days before our first game, Mr. Yorke asked me to stay after practice and talk to him. He then informed that I would not be playing in the first two games due to my grades, along with three other players. I was shocked. However, he talked to me for nearly an hour, explaining to me the importance of school, and something just clicked in my head, and I realized how ignorant I had been. From that year on, I always put school before everything else, so I would be able to do the things I love. Mr. Yorke really changed my perceptions on education for the better. I would have never raised my grades if he had not sat me down and talked to me, and I most likely would not be going to a four year university.
