Why I want to be a Chemistry Major by Colin - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my life, I have wanted to know the how of everything and thus sought to learn the foundations of our universe. Early on, I collected rocks and trinkets. As I learned about minerals, I became interested in the periodic table, even eating off a period table placemat as a child. Now, AP Chemistry deepens my understanding of origin and composition of the items in my collections. Next year, I’ll learn about how outside forces act on and shape our world in AP Physics. I am certain that STEM courses will be a significant part of my college education.

There is far more to learn than I can estimate currently, which excites me . And, every college has a course catalog filled with opportunity; like choosing elements off the periodic table. I plan to explore and then deepen my understanding of chemistry and physics. Particularly, the prospect of chemical engineering intrigues me as much as the rocks I collected, because it involves the assembly of molecules for practical applications.

With this information, I plan to solve problems. I revel in solving problems and then celebrating their solutions. Mastering the Rubik’s Cube was a literal celebration of completed puzzles. I can see myself solving problems that maximize efficiency as a chemical engineer or unlocking the mysteries of the universe as a physicist. These interests are inspired by the processes and works of Thomas Edison. His accomplishments resulted from deep understanding of the chemistry and materials in his workshop, subsequently applied to countless attempts at problem solving. Beyond the lightbulb, he used chemistry to create and perfect a stronger and flame-resistant cement. The outcome of his dedication was tested when one of his laboratories burned, leaving only the shell of the building which was made from his cement. Edison mastered countless disciplines; I intend to master multiple, through deeper understanding of the universe and its basic building blocks.
Moreover, the DuPont chemical company has the slogan “Better things for better living, through chemistry.” They marketed a better life for the public, based on chemical efficiency. Products like cellophane for wrapping, nylon for clothing, and corian for countertops have made our lives better. I envision myself bringing stronger, low toxicity, earth friendly products to the world.

Intellectually, the fundamentals of the universe and how everything is built around them fascinate me; I will never stop learning about them.
