Focusing On What I Love Most - Mathematics by Cole - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

One of my New Year's resolutions is to emphasize my work on those subjects I love, specifically mathematics. My work in mathematics is well beyond the usual caliber of any public high school student, or magnet school student for that matter (I know this because I attended a magnet school for two years). The list of mathematics courses I have taken/will take include Precalculus, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus, Axiomatic Geometry, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Harmonic Analysis, Field/Group Theory, and Real/Complex Analysis (I plan on taking this course next semester). I have also self-studied the following topics: Abstract Algebra and a more in-depth study of Field/Group Theory. I plan on studying more advanced topics of Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Harmonic Analysis during the summer between my senior year and my freshman year in college using textbook resources and resources provided by MIT OpenCourseWare.

I plan on broadening my scope of mathematics to incorporate more higher level math classes, while at the same time excelling in the three independent studies I am taking right now at my high school (they are all math classes). I love math, but I feel as though my attention to the subject has been divided, scant, and scattered. Thus, as of January 1, I plan on focusing more on mathematics, getting much better at it, and expanding my already broad horizon.
