Mental Health Awareness by cole - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

The class that I think deserves more emphasis in school is mental health class. The class has different names, the one I am currently taking is called Abnormal Psychology, this class is extremely important to students because it can provide a way for students who are dealing with mental health issues to recognize the mental health issue, if it was not already known, how to get help, and how to talk about it. There can be stigma surrounding mental illness, that it is just a mood, that the person will just snap out of it, but in some circumstances, people do not just snap out of it, a person with a mental illness could end up hurting themselves or other people.

Mental illness is not a light subject, there are dark parts to it, such as self harm, or even suicide. In order to prevent these events from happening, these classes should be part of college and even high school curriculum, while there are dark parts to mental health, there could be a young freshman in high school who is suffering from some form of mental illness, but does not know how or who to talk to about it. this class could be the opportunity for that person to seek help and possibly prevent self harm or even suicide.

it is very important for everyone, no matter age, to have access to the knowledge of mental health, and know the signs and how to deal with mental illnesses. this could go from adding a class into a curriculum, a mental health expert at each high school and college, and at every work place. mental illness does not care about age, race, or what your job is, it can effect anybody, but it is possible to control the mental illness. knowing the warning signs is one way to help control the illness, and if a class was added so that everyone had to take it would have positive affects for students.

I have learned an incredible amount of information about mental health since I have started this class just a few months ago, the class is very interesting, and provides lots of examples, information, help, and access to professionals. I feel confident that I could tell when my friends started showing warning signs of mental illnesses and I could act accordingly. I could talk to them without making them feel like they are different and do not deserve help. The more people that could identify mental illness warning signs and talk to the person and help them through the struggle, could have a significantly positive effect on the suicides from mental illnesses.
