Studying Abroad: An Abundance of Opportunities by Cole - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Studying abroad, whether during high school or college, can be influential to a person’s college education. For me, I believe that studying abroad during high school would widen my viewpoint on cultures and studies that I had not yet looked into. Many universities around the world have either a central focus in a type of study or are more skilled in providing an education in a specific field than other universities. These advantages may help to further my education in ways that are not offered at universities nearby.
Although there are some drawbacks to studying abroad as a high school student, it does have some perks. One drawback would be the fact that I would be moving away from my family and moving in to another as a foreign exchange student; however, in doing so, I would be able to embrace a culture that may be foreign to me. At the same time, I would be able to study at more prestigious high schools, learn new languages, and look into possibly moving on to university studies in the nation in which I would already be studying. Being a foreign exchange student in high school would help guide me into the major that I would want to study, and it would help me get into universities, considering that universities look highly on students who have successfully studied in other countries.
After studying in other countries in high school, it would be time to move up to the university level. I may choose to attend universities in the country I have been working in, or I may choose to study in yet another county. No matter the situation, continuing my education in a country that I was not born in would have a benefit towards my college experience. Many universities offer chances for students to attend school abroad while continuing earning their degree at their main school. Benefits to this include learning new cultures, religions, and languages while expanding my education in my major. Each country has their own viewpoint and style of teaching, and seeing through each country’s eyes would expand my view on the world and its many problems. Additionally, I would have an opportunity to work for companies across the world and learn business from a different perspective. Students who put forth the effort to prosper in their educations away from home will be dedicated to their future career as well, and businesses see this; therefor, studying abroad would increase my ability to get a good job and would widen my opportunities for jobs in the field.
I believe that studying abroad would affect my college experience in a positive way. I would expand my horizons as a student and as a person, and many more opportunities would be open to me around the world. Culturally, I would be able to see the world in many different perspectives, and, in doing so, gain a better understanding what really matters in life and how others live. Studying abroad is definitely something that I will have to consider when walking through my college plans and future.
