The Eternal Gratification of Patience by Cody - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

I am happiest when I help others. From mentoring peers in physics and calculus to helping an elderly neighbor check out items at the grocery store, I find the most fulfilling relationships with others to be those of mutual understanding and empowerment. The more I talk to and help someone, the more I can empathize with their situations and struggles they may be going through. The feeling when someone finally understands something I teach them is something I’ll never get tired of.

That’s what makes me human. Human connection is all about understanding. But we all still have limitations: people who drive you to the edge, or abnormal days when life feels like it’s never going to improve. For instance, when I thought I've successfully taught a classmate a math concept, they nod their heads yet still mess it up. I've learnt that in these times, it is important to keep your composure and think about the bigger picture. I recognize that patience is what makes my efforts valuable, so when I collaborate with others I try reexplaining difficult concepts in different ways, until I am absolutely sure they can apply it. That feeling of joy when my thoughts finally make it to theirs is what I now find myself striving for in every interaction I have.

Patience is what I will commit myself to mastering in the next few years, wherever I may be. Life is full of unknowns, but I know for certain that I'll continue trying to help others, and to the best of my ability keep a clear headspace and open mind at all times. Much of the world's problems can be solved by thinking rationally, and in those moments I'll trailblaze the path of composure I hope many will follow after.
