Book Club Material by Cody - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
This past year in my AP Language and Compostion class I read the Great Gatsby. Normally I don't like the books we are assigned to read in school but this book was different. I liked it so much because of one of the thought provoking and central question of the book; can the past be repeated? If I was having this conversation with Jay Gatsby himself he would say “Why of course you can!” But, I would beg to differ. This idea of repeating the past really intrigued me because I constantly think about the past and if I could do it again what would I change. Or, if I could pick up where I left off with something, would I? These questions really made me want to get into the book and see if Gatsby and Daisy could make it work and renew their love. Another part of the book that I liked was the raw drama and fantasy that was weaved throughout the plot. I loved the varying love affairs such as Gatsby and Daisy, Tom and Muriel, Tom and Daisy and how they were all different from each other. I enjoyed the drama and secrecy that every character contained. Each character had something to offer and secrets to hide. The whole book seemed a little like a mystery novel, all the suspicion and deceit. The extravagant parties painted a vivid picture in my head and made me want to be an actual character in the book and i have never had that feeling with any other book. All these things made this the best book I have ever read for school and I would highly recommend anyone else to read this book for an intriguing plot and characters.
