Leadership Skills by Cleon - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not?-Submitted by Cleon Dickerson, Jr.

In my opinion, leadership skills are definitely necessary for college success. According to Wikipedia (2015), leadership is defined as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". Studies of leadership have produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values, [3] charisma, and intelligence, among others. Some may consider the college experience as one that is considered to be an individual task. However, I disagree. One can not become successful without the assistance of others. College students will need to enlist the help of their professors, family and the school community in order to reach their optimum potential.

While in college, one has the potential to flourish individually as well as contribute to the community at large. Therefore, one must utilize his/her leadership skills in order to gain access to information and have a positive experience. I will be enrolling into college in the fall 2015. I will utilize my own leadership skills in order to connect with my school's faculty and students. In addition, I will use my leadership traits such as vision, values, and intelligence in order to become a positive role model. I plan to lead by example by becoming a stellar student and become a better person. In the near future, I will become a psychotherapist and help youth and families in need. I will carry over the new leadership skills that I learned while in college in order to make a positive change in the world.
