A Valuable Lesson by Clarissa - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

We always learn something new every day, even in classes that we are not so eager to attend. However, the most interesting lesson I have learned in a class did not come from the teacher, a heavy textbook, or a worksheet. It came from where I did not expect it: my fellow classmates. I thought that I would never learn something from my peers in the classroom, to be honest. Especially from those who come from troubled backgrounds and carry their issues to the classroom. Day by day, I was reassured that tolerance and respect must be applied ever day in order to avoid conflict with those that surround oneself, and importantly as well, that we should not judge others easily, because we are not in the position to do so, as we may not understand the difficulty of the situation of others. It is easy to let aside others, but what we do not realize is that this attitude only hurts us and the rest, weakening our links with those that surround us. Sometimes, it might be hard to get along with some individuals, but at least, we should try some cordiality towards them, and thus, with time the tension will be gone. And this is relieving for all inside the classroom, and outside of it as well.

This reassurance is really important, because it remind us our duty to coexist in harmony as possible with our community, and also because it is a lesson that you will have to apply every day in the future, and thus should be valued as one of the most important lessons you would learn from a class.
