With $10,000, Oh, the Things You Can Do by Clarissa - May 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I was granted ten thousand dollars, I would put it towards developing more trade programs into my past high school. By implementing these options into the school, it gives students practical knowledge and training to work towards a career, in addition to general education. Offering these options helps the community by investing in their students who will eventually be helpful to others in the community with what they had studied as their trade.
The benefits of trade programs include, but not limited to are time, cost, experience, direction and goal. Those benefits are just to name a few. For students that do not have the time or is having a hard time deciding whether they would like to attend college, a trade program may be a better option for them. Students can earn a degree in less time than attending a four year college, and will be able to get a head start in the workforce by starting their career sooner. As for cost, some students cannot afford to attend a college of their choice, or the college may not offer the trade program they are interested in. By offering a trade program, it helps cut the cost of paying for college tuition by giving students the opportunity to earn a license in the trade, and possibly advancing to a higher degree with already some knowledge and transferred credits. Trade programs give students a hands-on experience, and are at an advantage to getting a head start into the working world and career of your choice. It also gives an alternative for students who prefer to work with their hands rather than sitting in classrooms for lectures. Experience gives students more confidence and flexibility with what they choose to do. As a student who wish they had programs like this while attending a public high school, I feel when offering a program with many different trades to choose from, helps students find their direction and aim for a goal. When I graduated high school, I did not know what I wanted to do. I couldn't find my niche, because I did not have a grasp of what I would be good at. If my school offered a Licensed Practical Nursing program as a start, I would have gravitated towards that or something healthcare related. I did not know until a little while after college that I was interested in obtaining my nursing degree.
I know that implementing a program like this will take more than ten thousand dollars, however, every little bit counts, and it can be a step in the right direction. The community will benefit from it and can come up with ways to contribute to keep the program going if it turns to be successful. Graduates from these programs can have the option to open their own small business within the community, which people prefer.
