Is education a right or a privilege? by Claire - January 2021 Scholarship Essay
I believe that education is a right. As an American citizen, I was given the right to a free education from the second I stepped into my kindergarten classroom, up until a few months, when I graduate.
Education is the transmission of knowledge, values, and habits. Teachers transfer the information that they learned themselves, to their students. This is a sort of cycle, because out of the children in the classroom, most likely, one of them will become a teacher themselves. In my classrooms growing up, this person was me.
I am going to school to become an elementary teacher and special education teacher. I believe that every student that comes into my classroom deserves the education that they came into the classroom to receive. I believe that as the teacher, I am setting them up for the rest of their lives. I believe that no matter what they become in life, they will need at least some of the information that they were taught in school. Everyone deserves the opportunity to have that.
Because of the way our society is set up, there is a huge need for everyone to get free education. When you get to a certain age, you are expected to get a job that can support your family, and bring in a certain amount of money each month. Most of these jobs require the knowledge that you learned while you were getting your education in those twelve years of school. Without this, society would not be the same. People would not know how to function in the jobs they are expected to do, and the economy would suffer because of it.
In conclusion, you can tell from this essay that I am a big advocate for everyone getting free education, and that it is essential for a society to function correctly. I hope that in the future, our society will continue to believe that every child getting education is a right, not a privilege that they have to earn.
