How useful could an educational medicine based podcast be? by Claire - August 2018 Scholarship Essay
Nowadays instead of listening to the radio or reading books, people listen to podcasts. Podcast topics can range from horror stories, talk shows, and educational podcasts. If I had a podcast mine would be about new medical advances, viruses, and even current events that involve medicine or diseases. The intent of my podcast would be to inform people, not to scare people. If you break down the topic far enough and explain with help from professionals, it makes the topic less terrifying.
Why is informing people about medical advances and unknown viruses important? The more people know about a topic; the less fearful people will be if they know how to prevent them and their families from getting sick. They’re many dangerous viruses going around these days, so prevention is key to keep people healthy. Providing the public information about how to stay healthy and help others is what my podcast would be about.
Would I have guests on the podcasts? Every episode I would have a guest(s) that are key leaders in the cure or development of an experimental lifesaving vaccine or product. With their help, we would inform the public about their development. Like a radio show, I would have the ability to read questions that followers of the show could ask. I would publish the question for that podcast on the website a week prior, giving the listeners time to write and submit a question for the guest or myself to answer.
Podcasts are becoming more relevant in today’s society, and it is key that the medical world keeps up with the alternative ways of communicating. So if having a podcast about a certain topic gives the medical community a way to share their concerns about a new disease or information about new vaccines. Allowing doctors on the podcast gives the podcast the ability to inform people about vaccines and answer questions they may have, whether it might be breaking a myth or giving more information. Including the access to ask a doctor a question about something without having to make an appointment would be a tremendous help in helping people make decisions on getting their kids or themselves vaccinated, so they can obtain multiple opinions on the same topic.
So in conclusion, my popular education podcast would be used to benefit the medical community inform the public.
