2021 Lesson That Helped Me With My Academic Success by Ciriany - January 2022 Scholarship Essay
The academic 2021 year was challenging; Not only dealing with the COVID virus but also learning how to start to cope with life while having online classes and then adjusting to going back to school after spending almost a whole year doing remote learning. This life experience taught me how to deal with distractions and how to prioritize, which helped my academic success.
One of the biggest skills I have strengthened from this past year is getting adjusted to a new environment. Ever since I was little, I have never had online school, so becoming a junior, with new classes and teachers while being at my house learning from the computer was a very big change. Not having the teachers, be right by my side, was difficult since I am a visual learner. It was difficult to get one on one help and if I got their help, it was not the same as being in person and having someone explain to you face to face. There were also a lot of distractions that came from having school at home. I had my computer in which would get me distracted with YouTube or any notification I had. I had my family here in which I would get distracted talking too, or when taking a test, the house was not quite compared to a class; there was always noise and it would be hard to concentrate not only for tests but for class. The beginning of school was hard, having to adjust to all these things, but I slowly started getting used to my new environment, being able to concentrate my best with distractions and to see the most important thing which is being able to balance school under the new circumstances, which helped me get good grades and not get stressed out.
Then after becoming adjusted to having school at home, things changed again, and I started going back to school. This surprisingly was a big change for me. For a long time, I did not see big crowds of people, and I only saw my family, so seeing my friends and other students, and my teachers were very different. Another change was how schools modified some of their ways on their curriculum, creating it much harder not only for me but for all the students that were getting adjusted to their new environment. It was hard adjusting again since this time it was harder classes and a new environment, but it did not take me long since I was experienced in this kind of situation. This helped me academically since it did not affect it for too long and it made me develop even more.
Getting adjusted to the new environment and dealing with distractions really helped me, not only in school but extracurricular activities like soccer. It made me more confident and made me realize how to get through difficult things and different ways of solving different problems that I had, which also helped me put that same mindset towards school.
