Studies and Fun: A Balancing Act by Cindy - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

When anyone thinks of teachers, they also think of lessons in math, reading, science, etc. But the most important lesson I learned from a teacher was not how to calculate a percentage or how to mix two chemicals together. The most important lesson was actually quite contrary to what teachers and school staff normally teach; which is why I was quite surprised when my English teacher took me aside and told me to calm down, take a breath, and relax. Unlike every other teacher who preaches the need to study and play later in life once we are finally successful, my amazing English teacher made sure to show me how taking everything one step at a time is completely alright.
Living in the present and enjoying as life goes by is just as important as setting down stones for the future.
Ever since that day I’ve made sure to set aside at least one hour every day to relax, reflect, and take a breath. I’ve also started taking far more breaks than I used to. And since that day, I have noticed a significant decline in my stress level, a decline in my “moody moments”, an increase in tolerance level, and an increase in laughs. I have not regretted this change in my life. My more laid-back nature has not hindered my success in any way and I am happy to say that I no longer wave goodbye as life passes by. Instead, I join in on the fun.
I don’t have to choose between studies and entertainment. It is not two different options that can’t intersect. In actuality, it is like having one foot on either side of the door, where I can adjust how far I lean to either side. And when I accidentally lean too far to the “studies” side I just have to remember what my teacher taught me: to calm down, take a breath, and…
Relax.
