An Impossible Dream by Ciara - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
In the next ten years, I will be cooped up in a study room, surrounded by pictures of organs and human bodies. Medical school will be my sole focus when I am twenty-six. I will be traveling from clinics to hospitals, making sure every athlete I check on is safe and healing. But, without a degree, I would be transported into my parent’s home. I would feel lost in life because, unfortunately, my dreams are impossible without an education. No matter what I do, how I get there, or who I talk to, I will never achieve my dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon without an education. With an education, I am able to achieve my dreams of pursuing medical school, provide for my parents, and give young girls hope.
An education will prepare me to become my dream. My dream is not to stay in medical school forever, but to become an orthopedic surgeon. Except, if I do not score high enough on the MCATs or have a poor interview, I will not get into medical school. Of course, I can try again and again, but without an education, I will never be prepared enough to secure my spot. On the other hand, with an education, I can snatch the spot quickly. I will make sure I have over the top credentials, more experience than my other applicants, and the best interview my interviewer has ever seen. Thus, I can run into medical school and work my hardest at it. I will ensure my future patients that they get only the best treatment, which means I have to become the best doctor around. I want my patients to know they are safe and cared for by an educated and knowledgeable doctor.
An education will assure me that my parents are cared for. Whether I went into retail or became President of the United States of America, every cent will go towards my parents before me. Having an education will allow me to get a well-endowed job, which will enable me to provide for my parents. I want my parents to be well cared for because they went above and beyond for my care. My parents dedicated their time, money, and life to me. My parents made sure I had food on my plate every night, that I got the best education possible, and treated everyone with kindness. I will never be able to give back the time I stole from my parents. They could have gone to family parties, but instead stayed home with me while I cried over my math homework. I cannot give back my parents' life, where they dedicated every aspect of it to me. But, I can repay them with money. Even though, no amount of money will ever repay what my parents have done for me. But, with an education, I can send them on the most luxurious, relaxing vacations and stay in the fanciest hotels. Knowing that I am able to provide them all relief from stress, I know that I have become successful.
Achieving an education will give other young girls a sense of hope. It is commonly believed and argued that women have broken the glass ceiling in the workforce. In the medical field, patients will often request a male doctor over a female doctor simply because they believe a male doctor is smarter and more capable. While, on the other hand, women are just as capable. Specifically, for orthopedic surgery, there are less women working in the field. This is clearly shown with every live streamed national sport event, such as soccer, football, or basketball. When one looks to the sideline, it is filled with male sport trainers and orthopedics ready to bounce into action. Yet, if a girl was able to see even one female, it would give them a sense of hope, ability, and motivation. It is motivating for everyone to see someone else pursuing their dreams, even with so many odds against them. Although, if women are unable to pursue an education, they can never give young girls a sense of hope or ability. Rather, girls will be stuck back into the endless loop of growing up, providing for the family, and dying. Therefore, a young girl seeing a proud female orthopedic surgeon will show her anything is possible and lead her to pursue an education.
Nowadays, dreams are unable to be pursued without a degree. Even with a career as a streamer, one must work to learn about social media marketing and business decision making. With an education, I am able to achieve my dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, giving back to my parents, and giving young girls motivation. I hope in the next twenty years, I am able to go beyond America. I want to travel the world, providing relief to all ages and helping with every athlete. I want to go to Africa and give treatments or heal their wounds. Yet, without an education, I will never be able to achieve my dream: an orthopedic surgeon.
