Nerdy Now Morphs Into Successful Later by Christopher - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
At the age of ten, I was truly thwarted by an impact of inspiration as my fifth grade advanced math and science teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Lazar, uttered the following phrase about being a leader: “Nerdy and passionate now morphs into success later.” The concept of leadership has ultimately transformed me into the young scholar I remain today. However, I have not always portrayed the absolute characteristics of a leader; the act of becoming a true leader marks a life challenge which I have successfully circumvented.
Throughout my elementary years of schooling, I remained a shy, less social individual. I always raised my hand to answer multiple questions, however rarely partook in open discussion. This presented an inner dilemma as I always strove for academic excellence, but I aspired to become a leader in the classroom. Throughout middle school, I became more active in the classroom, avidly seeking opportunities to learn and aid other students in the process. My career interest in education developed increasingly as I grew to love teaching the lessons to my fellow students. I jumped at any chance to instruct the classroom as a whole and was often praised for my attention to detail and overall caring nature with which I would address the other students. My role as a leader has been fully established through my years in high school. A combination of challenging education and my intense motivation to remain an academic elite increased my opportunities to act as a leader. I became extremely involved in organizations to promote my role as a leader in the community. Serving leadership roles such as president of Interact, a community service oriented club and Band Captain of the Sevier County High School Band, I enveloped myself in a life of responsibility. I was even chosen as a Junior Barbeque Ambassador to the Blooming Barbeque and Bluegrass Festival conducted by the city of Sevierville; with this role, I served as a leader in preparing the festival and ensuring its smooth undergoing by aiding vendors and members of the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce. My leadership does not merely consist of outside community activities; my niche inside the classroom has directly influenced my propensity for leading and guiding others. I avidly open group discussion in the areas of English and history, and working problems out on the board for half an hour, determined to discover a solution to present to the class , became daily routine in subjects such as mathematics and science.
I began to embrace the aspects of a leader in every area of my life. I continue to serve as an active leader in my community, school, and even at home. I am the oldest of four children in my humble abode, therefore, I have also conquered my inhibitions of becoming a leader due to my siblings. As the oldest, I hold the main portion of responsibility in circumstances of guiding, teaching, and supervising my brothers and sisters. The experience of a larger family has molded me into the young leader I am today. Although I reserved myself in my younger years, I can now, thanks to the molding words of Mrs. Lazar, confidently express my passion for leading more than ever.
