Overcoming Slothful Academic Motivation by Christopher - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
As far as college goes, I have come across several Academic obstacles that I have had to strategize to overcome. This past year for example I have probably come across the toughest obstacle thus far in my Anatomy and Physiology class while attending UW-Manitowoc in Wisconsin, which I graduated from this past year and will be attending UW-La Crosse in the Fall.
This class was one of the heaviest classes I have taken with workload and information, yet the the content was not the hardest part of the class for me and two of my five group members. The year began with just me and two of my classmates, who later I became good friends with, when another group of three had issues. One member of that group found that he was doing all the work and the others would do nothing outside of class and he talked to our professor and it was decided to break up that group. He went to one group and my group got the other two.
This was a struggle for myself and my original group members due to the fact that we knew that they were not going to participate in projects and assignments outside of class. We tried and tried again to get the two involved so that they could at least deserve part of the grades they were receiving for the class so that it was fair to them and fair to us. I do want to state for the record they were informed of tasks to do, meeting dates/times, and other activities we put together for this class. So as the semester continued on, we (myself and my two key group members) began to work together, talking all the time, collaborating and planning out when assignments and projects would get done. We became very good at creating a schedule for us three to follow in order to get things done on time. We eventually became so good that a two week lab write up would be done within a week. We took turns preforming the labs, writing different parts of the formal lab write ups, and we worked really hard together on a research project that my two group members and I put together, which was a huge project to be approved by the R.I.B.
Now, the only time the other two expressed interest, if at all, would be the night before an assignment/projects due date asking how to divide the assignment up when we openly discussed with them the parts that everyone in the group would do. Even though this semester got quite stressful at times due to the heavy workload put on the three of us, there were several great characteristics that we were able to build from this. Our teamwork, communication, and work ethic all greatly improved due to this unfortunate circumstance, but we were able to push through and achieve success together as a group.
