Why studying abroad should not be necessary by Christopher - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Studying abroad gives individuals an opportunity to further expand and explore the word based on their personal career field of choosing. It allows individuals to learn more about the different cultures that exist in the world we live in and it enables individuals to create an unforgettable experience and to participate in a fun-learning environment. This is all true, but should all college students be required to study abroad? No, I personally do not think that all college students should be required to study abroad. Students who do not study abroad still have the opportunities, same learning criteria, and real life experience than those students who do decide to study abroad.
One of the many reasons students study abroad is to explore their career field in another country. They do this in order to get a different understanding on how their future work will apply to locations other than America and to get a taste of what these locations do differently and what they do the same. However, students who do not study abroad sill have access to this information and are still able to see how their career will apply in another country. They are able to research, ask others and attend events where this information is provided to them in their own hometown. There is no absolute reason in why students should be required to study abroad when all the information they need to know about any location is in the palm of their hands in America. Students now have access to high-end technology that is capable of providing them with the experiences and education that they would have received overseas.
Individuals who have studied abroad will probably say that they have learned much more about another country than they would have ever learned had they decided to not study abroad. In reality, they have learned just as much as what those who do not study abroad learn at their home school, just in a different way. Those who choose not to study abroad are still exposed to the learning criteria and the knowledge that others who do study abroad receive. They still have the opportunity to try various types of food, buy various types of clothing, experience different living environments and to learn about different cultures, all while staying in America.
Studying abroad provides individuals with various opportunities for learning and experiences, but it should not be necessary for college students to study abroad if they do not wish to. As stated before, those who do not study abroad still receive all of the benefits that those who study abroad receive; they just receive it in another, unique way.
