What is true leadership? by Christine - May 2024 Scholarship Essay

Before I can get into what I think leadership is I am going to describe what people often believe it to be. When people first think of a leader or leadership, they think of those that take charge and convince people to follow them. For me though a leader has a different definition, a leader isn't someone who takes charge and convinces someone to follow them, they are humble and a good example when no one else is watching. Someone who has integrity whether they are being watched or not, a leader doesn't convince people to follow him, but he invites people to do stuff with him and is kind to those who do and help them to become a leader and a good example themselves.

Someone who demonstrates leadership in my life is my older brother, although we don't always get along, we get along good enough and over the last few years I have seen how great of a leader he is. He is honest and humble even when he doesn't think other people are looking whether it is in school, work, or in sports he has integrity. He doesn't expect people to follow him, but he always offers to be people's friend and he doesn't view himself as a leader. One example of his leadership to me was through cross country, he came in my room at 7 A.M. and invited me to come to Cross country practice, after some considering the circumstances, I thought it couldn't hurt to start my summer off productive after all my brother did. As we were on a team together, I saw he was always honest about whether he was running on off days or not; our coach trusted everyone to run on there off days but not many did but Jeff did and although he didn't bring it up to coach you could tell because of how happy he was to run. Through Cross Country he volunteered when helping with meets and getting ready for camps and he has showed me that when it comes to being a leader the little things matter even if people don't notice at first your kindness and example rubs off on people leading them to follow the example set for them.
