Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Christina - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Are Leadership Skills Necessary for College Success?

In considering the question “Are Leadership Skills Necessary for College Success?” I first began by thinking about the traits of a good leader. Some important characteristics for all of us (whether leaders or followers) would include honest, truthfulness, kindness, compassion and being cooperative in working with others.

A leader is able to break down a large project into smaller, manageable pieces and then organize people into groups to focus on those smaller parts. The ability to be organized is important to keep track of the progress of the groups as well as the progress of the groups of the over-all project as they all work together toward the desired goal of the project.

Another important leadership trait would be the ability to recognize and rely on the strengths of others. Promoting and encouraging others in their efforts will benefit all involved with the project. A good leader will have a positive attitude and inspire others to grow personally to eventually become leaders themselves.
This means that a leader is also willing to be a teacher, a mentor, and even a role model, showing patients to others as they grow and learn. A good leader remains humble as well as accepting constructive criticism from others knowing that he isn’t perfect either.

As I indicated before in the first paragraph there are a number of characteristics that would be beneficial for all us to exhibit. Whether we are leaders or followers, all of the qualities I have previously listed for a good leader are also excellent strengths for anyone to possess. I believe that the more good characteristics traits a person exhibits the more success he will experience in college as well as any path he chooses in his life.
