Morning Owl by Christina - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Morning verses night, really, which am I more awake for? Well I am both a morning person and a night owl, with a partiality to being a night owl. But why?
It comes down to the types of productivity; scholastic, creative and physical. Being a student, much time and brain power is put into my studies. But also having a creative side demands time as well. With this in mind, all seem to have a preference on the time of day when their ‘most active.’
In the morning, after 9 AM, I’m most productive with my scholarly work. My mind is fresh and ready to learn whatever is being taught. My scholarly productivity often declines as the day progresses. Even by noon it is regularly declining to the point where my brain and, respectively, productivity is chocolate pudding—and demanding a break.
It’s at this time that another type of productivity becomes most fruitful, the physical. During mid-day, after my brain is exhausted, is when I’m most active. Be it exercising, cleaning or playing with the dogs. This is the time when I can whip up a tornado and get the chores done, house cleaned and dogs walked with energy to spare; but once the sun begins to set—that energy is gone, physically at least.
The night owl wakes up and takes flight now. The energy that went into the physical productivity drains into that of creativity. Writing and drawing are my big leisurely activities but they have a dislike for daylight hours. During the night is when my thoughts flow and pencil flies, creating both words and images alike, as they require little physical exertion and I don’t have to think about the day’s events—only about the music and what’s to go on the paper.
Being a morning person and night owl has Mount Everests and Marinara Trenches, often sleep is the last thing on my mind and can make early mornings a bit rough. But having the ability to be productive at many times of the day is well worth it.
