A Battle Between the Science Careers by Christina - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was six years old, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I would pretend to be a vet to my stuffed animals all of the time. Specifically, I wanted to be a horse veterinarian. Every book that I read had to have horses or some other animal in it. Horse stickers, posters, and pictures covered my room. My comforter had horses on it. Almost all of my stuffed animals were horses. I was completely obsessed. I was that little girl that dreamed of getting a pony for Christmas or my birthday.
Throughout most of elementary school, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I still loved horses. Most of the books that I read and movies that I watched had horses in them. “Black Beauty” and “Flicka” were some of my favorites. While I was still infatuated with horses, I had realized that being a veterinarian meant that I could also help other animals. I started to read books about all different types of animals. I would get so excited when my family could go to the zoo. I would want to get there when it opened and would not want to leave until it closed. I would make sure my dad took hundreds of pictures of all of the animals and every sign with information on the animals so that I could go back later, look at all of the pictures, and read all of the information about each one. I loved animals.
In middle school, I became torn. I was not sure if I wanted to be a veterinarian or a doctor. I went back and forth whenever people would ask me what I wanted to be. I have gotten to know a little of what it was like to be a veterinarian as I helped my dogs give birth to puppies. All through middle school and a little into high school, my sister and I ran our own dog breeding business. I loved playing with all of the puppies and taking care of them. I learned a lot through this experience. One the other hand, during one of my science classes, I had to do a report on the brain. The brain fascinated me. This report is what sparked my interest in the human body. I still loved going to the zoo and reading about all of the different species of animals, but I also enjoyed learning about the human body and the way that it works.
At the beginning of high school, I still was not entirely sure whether I wanted to be a veterinarian or a doctor. I talked with many of the people whom I knew were doctors or veterinarians. As I learned more about the human body, I became more and more intrigued. Slowly, I started to tell people that I thought I wanted to become a doctor. After I had taken my anatomy class, I became more certain that I wanted to become a doctor. My anatomy teacher is one of the main reasons why I chose this. She showed me how amazing the human body is. I enjoyed the challenge of trying to understand the body. The human body is truly miraculous. Now, I have decided that I want to be a doctor. I want to be able to help people, and becoming a physician gives me the chance to do that. I still like animals. I get just as excited as I did when I was a little girl when we get to go to the zoo or see animals, but I believe that I will enjoy being a doctor more.
I now want to become a military doctor to help those who have sacrificed so much for our country. My dad was in the Air Force for twenty-one years. He used his passion for computer science to serve our country. Similarly, I want to use my passion for science and the human body to comfort the people in our military in their darkest times. I know that becoming a doctor will not be easy. There was a long time as I was growing up in which I kept going back and forth between working with animals or with people, but I believe that I have finally found where I am meant to go. Becoming a doctor is a big dream, but even as a little girl, I have always dreamed big.
