My learning experience by Christin - March 2024 Scholarship Essay
In the year 2022, I got my first job on an international outreach team at my college. It was a part-time job, good money for my expenses to be covered. The whole team had 4 members including me, we are all from different countries. I like to share my experience with two of my teammates. I like to call the first person X and the second person Y. Both are really great teammates, but in some situations and moments, they helped me learn and grow in work and life. I believe that I learned how to be patient, understanding, kind, and forgiving in the work environment.
Firstly, I like to share my learning experience with X. X is a disabled, short-tempered, and brilliant person. During the shift, he needs a lot of time to achieve it, but his mindset amazes me because whatever the level of difficulty of the task, he will never give up or rest until it's completed. This is the first thing I learned from him, never give up on you and don't give importance to what the world thinks about you.
When I started to work with him closely when we both were assigned to a particular task. In the beginning, it was hard for me to wait long and to coordinate with him. But slowly, I started to talk with him and I learned all the difficulties that people with a similar disability face in their life. I have seen some other students misbehaving with him and he gets angry quickly in these situations, I will immediately intercept the conversation and calm him down because I know him and his disability.
During our shifts, I got a chance to know him very well. He is slow in doing things, no he takes his time to do things, but he is a man of general knowledge. I am confident that I was a great listener and I learned a lot about the world news and improved my skill to be patient, kind, and understanding.
Secondly, person Y was the person who almost got me angry and frustrated. He was a person who always came to work high and drunk. I tried to advise him to change and to act professionally at work. I thought of complaining but he is the only provider to his family and he started to be like this due to his childhood trauma. It is easy to complain, avoid and not to care, but I insist. I tried to change him and it was impossible to make him normal at least during his shift time. I shared the stories of people who became successful from the same background he faces.
Slowly he was able to change his addiction. He helped me to be kind and forgive.
I am really thankful to both of them because they are the ones that helped me to be a patient, understanding, kind person, and to forgive anyone. I always remember them in my prayers and sometimes I call them to ask about how they are doing.
