Diversity is Unity by Christian - September 2023 Scholarship Essay
At El Cajon Valley High school, the population of students is very diverse. From Hispanic to African to Middle Eastern. The diversity of the school is one of its unique traits but also a major problem in the school spirit. Things such as assemblies, sport events, and spirit weeks are all a victim to the lack of school spirit at El Cajon Valley. If there was one thing I could change about my school, it would be to strengthen the spirit and participation.
At our school, assemblies are a huge resource that we use to unify the students and influence them to be more involved in activities for the school. Having many immigrants and foreign language speakers takes a toll on school participation. Foreign students are not used to assemblies or sports teams and such. Because of this, many assemblies are often quiet due to lack of applause and excitement. If I had the authority to change this, I would begin by finding activities and topics that students can relate with and become engaged in. By doing this, the school would be able to give those students a home feeling and nostalgia that would encourage the students to partake in the activities and enjoy themselves.
Furthermore, sports simply do not receive a lot of love at El Cajon Valley. Many students fear stepping outside of their comfort zone and attempting new things. My response to this would be to bring together all the sport captains and provide comfort to students who may be interested but are scared of being a part of sports. Sports are a major way for schools to unify and have a strong spirit. By encouraging more students to play sports or even support the events, El Cajon Valley can take one step forward in building a strong spirit.
The most important and effective way to unify a school is by spirit or multicultural week. Here at El Cajon Valley, multicultural week is the one week in school that speaks to everyone. It is a way for people of different backgrounds to unify as one and learn many different things about one another. I believe if multicultural week was expanded into week(s), then it would bring the students closer and create the foundation of coming together to form a school spirit like no other.
Ultimately the one thing I would change at El Cajon Valley High school would be to bring students together and grow in school spirit in order to provide a safe and fun environment for everybody. Assemblies, sports, spirit/multicultural weeks can all be a stepping stone in creating a unified school of diverse students. That is the one true importance about a school.
