Know What You Want by Christian - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

“Know what you want.” Those four simple words impact my thought process and my life every single day. From sun up to sun down, I think of this valuable lesson that my NJROTC instructor Major Michael Beale, he served in the United States Marine Corp for more than 20 years, taught me in the ninth grade. Major Beale looked me straight in the eyes while in his military uniform and told me to “know what you want” when I wasn’t sure of what to do with a task I was trying to complete on that day.

I constantly remind myself each day to “know what” I want in life. I came to the realization long ago that the thing I want most in life is to honor and glorify my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by living by His Word, which is the Bible. What does it mean to live by the Word of God? Living by the Bible revolves around the concept of “living a life of love” and that is made up of compassion, empathy, sympathy, and determination. Each and every person I encounter, whether I know them personally or I have never seen them before in a day in my life, I do my best to show an abundance of love toward them. I try to speak in a way that is beneficial to them and I bend over backwards to try and treat them with a plethora of respect and kindness. I do my best to always go the extra mile to say something positive and uplifting to the person I am interacting with. I do my best to help people whenever I have the time and the ability to do so. I am determined to save sex for marriage because by doing so, I am showing the highest amounts of respect to women and I know God honors that. Whether people realize it or not, every time I show compassion, sympathy, empathy, and kindness toward them, I am showing them the loving nature of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Whether people know it or not, by saving sex for marriage, I am letting God shine through me and I am living life with a high level of honor. When all is said and done, when my time on this Earth ends, I am determined to meet my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and tell Him I did my best to help all of the people He placed onto my path. I am determined to live a selfless life that is filled with honor and love. By living a life of love, I am doing what I want to do the most in life and that is honoring my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Since I constantly remind myself to think of Major Beale’s lesson of knowing what I want in life, I always do my best to look ahead and develop long term plans. I am always thinking of ways of how I can better the skills and the personality God has given me to further myself throughout life. While most people my age only think of today or tomorrow, I often think months, if not years, ahead of time. I maintain a steady vision of what I want to do when I start college in the Spring of 2017. I am striving to get involved in USF’s student government and join a Christian organization. I maintain a steady vision of what I want to do after college. At some point, I would love to start up a business of some sort and do new things to spread the Gospel to the people. I am always thinking of the steps that are needed to bring my long term vision into fruition. I dream about all of the different ways God is going to use me to help others. I dream about all of the good things God is going to do for me and my family. By reminding myself of Major Beale’s lesson, I am maintaining a long term vision of what I want to accomplish in life and I am having faith that God will use me to do great things in the future.

In essence, the lesson I learned in ninth grade about knowing what I want in life influences every major decision I make. From sun up to sun down, I do my best to do what I want to do the most in life which is honor and spread the name of my Lord Jesus Christ. From sun up to sun down, I do my best to maintain a steady vision of what I want to accomplish throughout my entire life. All because a brave and honorable U.S Marine told me four words, “Know what you want.”
